How UN Women and the Larkin and Lacey Frontera Fund Promote Girls Education

Women do the work of holding up half of the proverbial sky. Wangari Maathai, who had earned several advanced degrees in the sciences, was able to lead other women in her native country in Kenya to develop an interest in and to work towards planting trees so that the natural environment of rural Kenya would be protected.

Wangari Maathai, who won a Nobel Peace Prize for her work through the greenbelt movement, is just one excellent example of what women are capable of when they can receive an education. As Wangari Maathai demonstrated an educated woman is often able to change the world.

The mission that UN Women has set out to achieve involves promoting equity and helping to advance the empowerment of women and girls. UN Women is currently dedicated to providing its leadership as the United Nations and its member states attempt to achieve the fifth sustainable development goal which involves making gender equality a reality and promoting the empowerment of women.

According to the agency’s website the literacy rates for women around the world still currently lag behind the literacy rates for men around the world. According to research 89% of men are literate while 80% of women are literate on a global scale.

The statistics become much worse when the literacy rates among women in developing countries are closely examined. UN Women reports that just over half of women who live in the Global South are able to read.

 

While many people who have had the chance to complete school might take the ability to read for granted not being literate can actually hold women back in a number of ways. When people are unable to read it is easier for them to be taken advantage of in their professional life and in their business dealings.

UN Women has led efforts to support girls education in the Caribbean nation that is known as the Dominican Republic where it has dispensed resources for a program that encourages girls to learn about information technology.

 

A foundation that is known as the Lacey and Larkin Frontera Fund has also been working on aiding efforts in the education sector that will impact girls. The Lacey and Larkin Frontera Fund has participated in helping to fund a co-ed school that directed its focus towards preparing its students for college.

The school is focused on providing an environment where female students can learn about topics such as engineering and science alongside their male counterparts. The school that the Fund supported is also focused on exposing its students to college and on preparing them to attend college.
