Who I Work Best With
I do believe that there is a Birth Doula for every woman who wants one. I also know that I am not the right Birth Doula for every woman. If you liked what you read about my approach, please consider the following traits of my ideal clients (mother and partner) and determine whether you feel we would be a good match.
My clients have a clear vision of the birth they desire
I have learned over the years that focusing on what we want gets us closer to a vision than focusing on what we want to avoid or what we don't want. It's a slightly different perspective, but it is powerful because it takes us in the direction we want to go rather than keeping us stuck in a perspective of fear or powerlessness. Clients who have a vision of what they want for their birth are proactive participants in their experience and feel empowered to make informed choices that work best for them.
My clients take responsibility for their lives
Clients who work best with me take responsibility for their actions, words and feelings. They understand that they create their own reality and that the efforts they make to educate themselves and advocate for their own care will have a direct impact on how they approach the birth of their babies.
My clients are open to learning
My clients are committed to learning about what happens during the labor and birth process, the options that are available to them during birth, and are able to make their own empowered decisions by having that information. Clients have taken or plan to take a childbirth education class to learn about the options that are available to them during pregnancy, labor and birth.
My clients understand that labor and birth are not events that can be controlled
Although I encourage my clients to create a set a preferences for their birth (also known as a Birth Plan), they understand that this is the best case scenario, and that during the labor and birth process, even the best laid plans change. In taking the time to educate themselves and learn how to communicate with their caregivers, clients are better able to adapt quickly and make new choices based on new information.
My clients are open to trusting in their bodies and trusting in birth
Even though it can be difficult and they may not completely believe this statement at the start of our relationship, clients are open to the possibility. Through our work together, as my clients learn more about birth, they often become more open to the thought that their bodies and their babies will know what to do, and they are better able to surrender to the process.
If these statements and my approach resonate with you, we could be a very good match, and I would like to invite you to read on and find out more about how we could work together.
